Content Guide

Pagebound is different from most social media. We’re focused on discussion and creating meaningful dialogue (leading to meaningful connections), which also means we operate a little differently than what you’re likely used to.

We have guidelines in place to preserve the magic of our community. We also want to be transparent about what we are and what we aren't. We aren't a fit for every user, and that's okay. Hopefully, this guide helps you decide if our community is a fit for you.

Our values:

🌲

Discussions about books are timeless

You'll notice that posts and comments have no timestamps on Pagebound. Social media has trained us that "old" convos are no longer relevant, but when it comes to books, we don't think this should be the case. We value posts that spark discussion over memes and low effort "throwaway posts" (that does not mean we don't value humor; we love our comedians). It's a balance between fun and substance, and our users strike it well.

👯

Everyone is equal

We connect readers based on shared taste in books. We aren't a platform to build a following or become an influencer. In fact, we don’t show public follower accounts, and your account can be as anonymous as you choose. Here, you make friends based on the thoughts you share and your contributions to the community. We have no algorithm, so clout and drama don't win by default. Instead, we have an upvote, downvote system for community moderation.

❤️

Everything is human

We recognize how harmful AI is to the authors & creatives in our community, which is why Pagebound is anti-AI. No AI in our features or work, ever. All recommendations on Pagebound are curated by humans, which creates real diversity in our Lists, Quests, and book recommendations. We are reminiscent of the old-school internet, when websites had personality and a friend making you a playlist meant more than an algorithm predicting your taste.

For Book Forums

When you post in a book forum, your post lives there forever for future readers. It is also sent to the feeds of everyone with that book in their library. To preserve the quality of everyone's experience, we have Posting Guidelines we ask you to read when you create an account.

Book forums are for timeless discussion. Good things to think about: Does this post spark discussion? Will someone else stumbling upon this who doesn’t know me be interested?

A no-context reaction post (like an emoji or “wow!“) will be archived by “PageboundBot,” an anonymous moderator account run by humans. We definitely want you to post reactions, but without context, it's impossible to know what you’re reacting to. Imagine you read a book 3 months ago and you see "Thoughts from page 288: wow”—you’d have no idea what that's about.

In general, it is good practice to check the forum before posting. This applies to Book forums, Quest forums, and the Pagebound Club. Repetitive posts compromise the quality of the forums.

In the book forum, you’re welcome to post a “repeat” if you have a different take than an existing post; but you also may want to consider jumping in on existing discussions.

Personal updates do not belong in the book forum (posts like: “Read on the train today,” “Listening to the audiobook,” etc). You can share this type of content by commenting on your progress update from the Activity tab on your Profile.

For Pagebound Club

We are a site to talk about books, so all posts should be book related. Pagebound Club is a hub for book-related topics that are not specific to a book, author, or series.

When you post in Pagebound Club, every user on Pagebound can see your post. Ask yourself: is this something I want to blast to tens of thousands of people? Your post might be better in a Quest forum (e.g., posting in the SciFi Starter Pack Quest for SciFi book recommendations).

It’s also worthwhile to scroll a bit or use the search bar to see if your post is a repeat.

Pagebound Club is not a customer service platform; if you have a very specific question, see a bug, or need help with your account, visit the FAQ first, then submit a bug/feedback form from Contact Us or email us at team@pagebound.co.

For Creating Lists

Lists are intended for the community. They are our way of providing human recommendations and helping you discover new reads that aren’t driven by an algorithm. If a list is mainly for yourself (“My Fall TBR,” “My Favorite books”), you can create a shelf in your Library instead.

The best lists are specific and unique: “Good Thrillers” vs. “Horror featuring Southern Gothic Mansions.”

If you're making a list for an author or series, check if that list already exists.
